I have a Hofner Shorty Bass, which I soon noticed was neck heavy. One day the neck tilted down, the strap popped off and the headstock hit the floor chipping one of the tuner pegs. After some research, finding that the factory tuners were guitar tuners I eventually discovered these, and were a PERFECT fit. Effectively the same as the tuners supplied on the bass itself but with all metal construction. I noticed these hold tuning better than the originals too. Very nice and easy way to upgrade the Shorty Bass. The only downside (if you can call it that) is I now have two "spare" tuners.
I first bought these tuners simply because of the price. I was trying to save money on a dreadnought I was building. But when I got them I was pleasantly surprised.
They are great tuners. They hold tune very well and there is no give in the gears. They do the job and also look nice if you like the open gear look.
These tuners are great value for the price. I already ordered two more for future projects. Can highly recommend.
Bought as replacement tuners for my Gretsch Alligator Biscuit Resonator as the old ones were made of plastic and they broke off quite easily in a single (obviously accidental) drop with the guitar still inside her case
They fit perfectly the preexisting headstock holes and as a plus they add some shine on the overall aesthetics of the guitar (if you're looking to tune your Alligator Buiscuit up a bit i definitely recommend these)
I bought these for a cittern I was building - and since I needed a lot of machine heads I also needed some that were economical, and these fitted the bill brilliantly.
Functionally these work very well - they tune smoothly with only a hint of "new tuner stiffness", I've certainly had much more expensive tuners that were far stiffer than these straight out of the packet. That's not to say they're slack though, there's little or no slack in the mechanism and tune nice and precisely.
My main complaint about these is their weight - they're die cast and you can certainly feel it on the headstock. That's not so much of a concern for 6 string owners, but for those us whose strings go into double-figures it's definitely an issue.
