The Japanese company Maxon has been going a long time, despite it never really being known to us. Meanwhile, word got out that the legendary Tubescreamer TS808 has long been manufactured by Maxon, and Maxon is now bringing virtually all of its old treasures back onto the market. Naturally that includes the "mother of all overdrives", the Maxon OD-808.

Similar in design to the earlier, manufactured overseas TS808, it also retains the legendary JRC 4558 D chip. Compared to the later TS-9, it sounds a bit softer and clearer - the "mid-knock" of the later Tubescreamer is less pronounced. For many, it is simply "the" Overdrive.

Get the Maxons instead

No offense for the Ibanez, but this pedal is a lot better purchase than the Ibanez version.

Here's why - I had a TS808 a year ago and it died on me. The switch broke and it was a tiny switch with a spring inside, and the switch is very hard to get in hands with. The switch on this will last you forever.

I like how this pedal gently boost the signal without being too hard on the amps distortion, like you can experience on some overdrive pedals where your sound is ruined by too much boost. The minimum setting on this can be great for blues, then turn up gain and you will be the master solo player in metal history.

The knobs feels very nice, doesn't turn too easily and isn't too hard to turn, just the perfect rotation.

Do not drop the pedal, it's too sturdy or it'll make a huge hole on your floor.

I think it's a new trend from pedal companies, but it was nice to receive the pedal with rubber feet still not installed, so you have the selection between rubber feet or velcro.

Som titlen siger, så er denne pedal tilfældet hvor "kopivaren" er bedre end originalen, nemlig Ibanez' TS808...

Maxon lavede Tube Screameren for Ibanez for lang tid siden, så det giver mening at OD808'eren er et "bedre" valg end Ibanez.

Med godt halvdelen af prisen af Ibanez'en, er OD808'eren en pedal der næsten er umulig at overse.
Den lyder IDENTISK til Ibanez' TS808!

Maxons pedal er lidt mere "skrabet" i finishet, men byggekvaliteten og lyden er i top.

Heads up for synth and keyboard players

This guitar pedal does not work well with the low impedance line output typically found on synthesizers. It will only work well with the high impedance output of electric guitars.

Basically you will not get any noticable overdrive effect at all out of this pedal when using it with a low impedance line output, the gain knob will do virtually nothing to the signal. Unless you turn the volume of your synth extremely low and boost/amplify the signal at a later stage, but then you will most likely get undesirable noise and the overdrive effect will still only barely be noticable.

Only the tone and balance knobs will work when using this with low impedance line out, but then the pedal becomes just a lowpass filter with a volume knob and no overdrive effect.

If you want to use this pedal with a synthesizer, or any other low impedance output, then you will need something such as a reamp box, to convert your low impedance line out to a high impedance instrument output.

Sounds as great as a 808 should sound, there is a side noise when it is turned on though, but my Rocktron Hush 2X removes that with ease.
Side noise came from a power supply that claims to have independant outlets, using it with my CIOKS and no side noise what so ever.
Can be perfectly used as tranparent boost, spicing up high gain channels and trough a clean channel as a regular overdrive.
