I have been doing voiceover for more than 20 years. I use a Neumann TLM 49 or sometimes a Sennheiser MKH 416 going into an Avalon M5 preamp. This has been working great for me in a long time - it just sounds pristine. Years ago I did some work in a studio and heard my voice on a Manley Voxbox. That was just amazing, and ever since I have been looking for a cheaper way to get that warm and smooth sound that the optocompressor and the tubes adds (I don't need the preamp, EQ and the de-esser from the Voxbox). Since I got the Warm Audio WA-2A I needn't look no further. This was exactly what I was looking for. This unit is the perfect choice for voiceover work. Perfect 'transparent' compression and great sounding tubes. And if the customer don't want any compression just turn the peak reduction down to 0, and you'll still get that awesome tube sound. Don't hesitate (as I did) - get one now! I never tried the original LA-2A and I don't need to ;-)
This is my first hardware compressor.. and I'm glad I decided on the Warm.
Using it mainly for vocals and even with very little compression applied I've noticed an incredible improvement in sound.
My ribbon microphone never sounded smoother or more warm. A welcome upgrade from any software compressor I've used.
