tc electronic BQ500 Bass Head

This is a really good class D amp for the money. Solid build and super clean sound. If you're looking for a lot of watts in a small package, you'll probably be very happy. However, it has no sonic personality of its own. It's like playing through a good PA amplifier. Don't expect the classic TC sound. The EQ is helpful but not colorful. The gain control is just there to set input level - don't expect any grit or overdrive. As others have noted, the compressor cuts a lot off the high end, so I don't use it.

I put a SansAmp in front of it, and that combination sounds great. When I want some grit, I kick in a TC MojoMojo pedal, which I bought for guitar but turns out to be fantastic for bass too. And if you want compression, you'll probably be happier with an outboard pedal.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thoroughly happy with this amp. I just wanted a power amp, and that's how I use it.
