I wanted this as it has the lowest gain of the preamp tubes, 16.94 so that I can try it in different positions in my amps. (12AY7 43.75, 12AX7 100) This is just the thing to clean up a rather wild amp. It all depends on YOUR favourite sound from an amp! This is the ultimate for a clean sound. I just like the amp to be on the verge of distortion. so far my favourite position is in V2 (Valve 2), but of course the overall gain is lower. Just turn up the volume a bit more than you would normally.
This was purchased to calm down the drive/gain in my Behringer VT999, based on reviews on the Thomann-site.
It did exactly what I had read here, and what the VT999 really needed; a tube that gradually increased the gain over the 1 - 10 scale. It has plenty of gain when necessary, and also gives an opportunity to find "the sweet spot" where the break-up/gain is just perfect.
I bought this to replace the somewhat harsh tube that came standard in a Behringer VT999. It was just right - not so much output as a 12AX7 - turned the VT999 in to a dream distortion pedal.
