I've had 2 of these and both have broken in the same place, I've re-soldered them but the breaks are in awkward places! and the length of the cable doesn't allow for many re-soldering attempts.
The sound is pretty good for a cheap piezo pickup, but still needs a lot of EQ-ing for it to sound anything near a double bass. Maybe it'd pair well with a good mic, but I'd suggest spending a little more money and getting a better pickup.
Easy to install in the bridge (use the supplied self adhesive tape). Since the gaps in the bridge of my bass were pretty large I had to add some custom bit of copper tape to make the pads fit snug. The sound quality lacks in clarity compared with using mikes, but very suitable on stage, especially since the risk of audio feedback is reduced a lot.
The jack socket and velcro mounting are very cheap, self adhesive velcro does not attach well, the quality of the jack socket is poor.
I have a 5-string double bass and the Shadow SH950 pickup. It reproduces the acoustic tones quite evenly and with a warm, woody tone. Combined with a GK amp MB-112 it really speaks out.
I have have now got the repair shop at Thomann engaged to fix the buzz or humming problem that comes after a while using this model. It is the second time around for this problem.
I feel that The Underwood pickup is far better than Shadow - notwithstanding the same pickup principle - the Underwood is more durable and stable.
Next time i will go for a microphone solution with a swan neck mounted on the tailpiece instead.
I have been using this pickup for a few months now and have no issues with it, good all round sound, easy to use. The pads were fairly thick so i had to sand down the bridge a bit to slot the pads in but this wasnt much trouble. Would definitely recommend this pick up.
It is easy to put on and take off and have lent it out to friends who have used it and gave positive feedback on it.
the velcro sticky strip you get with it is handy but can only be put on one bass, otherwise you'd have to find another strip.
