I'm using these connectors for making my own MIDI cables in my quite specific studio setup.
Pros:
- excellent price to quality ratio
- sturdy with proper strain relief
- metal casing
- easy to solder
- fit well in all MIDI sockets
Cons: none
I've been using these for quite some years now. Some users might find it irrelevant but I like how these plugs slide into all MIDI sockets on all of my devices, while I hade some ready made cables that had to be plugged in and out with decent force.
While not a con, I'd like to see more variants of this connector, e.g. 90 degrees angle, etc.
I use this one for an old Philcorda which has an 5 pin audio output. I also used cheaper ones but i really prefer this one. First of all the metal case is really stable and solid. Then the cable relief and rubber break protection is also very solid. At least the connection pins inside are very easy to solder. The solder almost sticks to the pins. This is a mess with the cheap ones. Espacially becaus there are five of the pin connectors and they´re very small. So if you want a long live, easy to solder connctor invest the more bucks ans go for the neutrik! I only used it for audioconnections. Don´t know how it works for Midi.
Using these to make my own midi cables. These are easy to solder and seem sufficiently robust to withstand frequent handling.
The fitting between the metal case and the plastic core is very tight. On one connector the case was slightly ovalized, not that this could be visible to the naked eye, but enough to prevent the plastic core to slide to its position. A gentle press on the metal opening with a suitable sized drill was enough to sort this out, but if I had not the proper tools I would be stuck with an unusable item.
Neutrik have always produced industry standard plugs and sockets and musicians and engineers have come to expect nothing short of excellence from them --- these plugs are no exception so buy with confidence!
Very sturdy midi connector for making custom midi cables. The housing could be a little shorter to be more pedalboard friendly. Great for keyboards and other devices where space is mot cricial
I use this connectors for a MIDI Cable that's 10 meters long from my guitar processor to the controller. When it comes to this type of connector don't get cheap. The pins inside are really close and so with cheaper versions of connectors it's really hard to solder them, but not with this one. The metal case and the cable strain do their jobs pretty well. Good quality
I've had some MIDI cables with these Rean connectors and decided to buy a bundle to make my own. these are very easy to solder and put together, and feel much nicer to me than plastic. the only thing I don't like is that the strain relief clearance is really big and I like to use compact cables, and it also feels like it won't do much as it is very soft material. MIDI cables don't move much so I don't see that as a problem but a slightly firmer and tighter relief would be a bonus.
