Having not played drums for over 10 years I was after a set that would reawaken my passion without breaking the bank.
I'd spent months pondering over affordable e-kits and compact club sets as space was restricted and then landed upon the MX420 studio.
This kit offered acoustic playing which I decided was preferred, but in a 'studio' form factor with downsized bass drum and toms. My plan was to always run this kit on Evans DB ones and low volume cymbals so I wasn't necessarily after super amounts of tone or tunability, however I have been surprised and delighted at the sound the poplar/birch shells produce, particularly the rack toms. Other surprises included the padded claws for the bass drum, protected bass hoop and quality of hardware. The wrap is slightly on the cheap side but under the right light looks more premium than you'd expect. My only issues was the torque of the shell lugs where every screw and bolt required tightening before installing the heads. The rims could've been made from a higher quality steel and finished better as there were a couple of rough edges and corrosion from storage. These are all minor issues when you consider the cost of this kit, as it truly is in my view one of the best value kits you can buy.
