K&M stands have always been around me for my trumpets and cornets on performance gigs and at the schools I’ve taught at where they’re the stands of choice. On gigs I used another system for my flugelhorn or took my chances with a K&M trumpet stand. However, quite by accident I tried a K&M dedicated stand for my flugelhorn and ordered one immediately.
The first thing I noticed is that it’s bigger and heavier and that can seem annoying, until I remembered that it’s a K&M stand that disappears into the horn bell when not in use.
And when it’s in use, it makes a big difference, because the size and weight give me a peace of mind I never had before, either with a trumpet/cornet stand or the other system we were using on gigs.
Sometimes we forget that a flugelhorn is a much different instrument than a trumpet/cornet, not just in playing technique and sound, but in physical construction. With it’s bigger bell and different weight distribution and ‘broad-shouldered’ build it needs a dedicated K&M stand .
It gives peace of mind while on the job, using less energy worrying about the stability of the horn, knowing that it’s safe, sound and nearby.
