I installed this into my ESP LTD Alexi 600 and it really does make the guitar sound a lot like Alexi's. the ABQ boost makes a big difference, and I hardly ever turn it off. All in all, it's the perfect pickup for whoever wants to play finnish melodic death metal, especially Children of Bodom.
Bought it for my LTD Ripped and it rocks. Amazing agressive tone, with good note definition. Could not install it by myself, so I've paid a luthier to do the job.
History:
I've always been fascinated by Alexi's tone - so simple yet powerful and punchy. After trying to mimic it for many years there has always been something missing. So finally I decided to give this pickup a try. It got installed into an Ibanez RG350DXZ and boy did it sound good!!!
Sound&Feel:
Not only it sounds amazing, but it feels that way too - juicy and powerful, yet articulate. As for the million dollar question - how 'Alexi' is the tone - I can safely say it is EXTREMELY 'Alexi'. I've been able to nail the tone of each of COB's albums. Thanks to the internal preamp, the guitar is now screaming when an artificial harmonic is played.
Pros&Cons:
Build quality is outstanding. Installation is quite easy really and you've got everything you need in the kit.
The only thing I find inconvenient about it is the preamp gain control is hard to reach when installed on a front-routed guitar. So make sure to set it up to your liking BEFORE closing the guitar.
Final Words:
Great sounding pickup, definitely delivers that Alexi sound and feel. I doubt there's a better one to get you there.
Don't buy if you don't know how to use the pre-amp. The pickup is passive and has a weak output. But if you use the pre amp with it. It becomes a different animal. The gain is too much. You just need to dial boost to its sweet spot. The pickup cannot be used for cleans when boosted. It's like a pickup with a built in tube screamer. Also take time to experiment on the built in EQ.
